Qualifications

NZSIA Telemark offers three different levels of certification, plus a Crossover Course. Please note that the old Telemark Stage One is now called Level Two and the old Stage Two is now Level Three.

Telemark Level One Certification

This three-day course is designed for those looking to begin instructing telemark skiing and develop their own telemark skills. The course covers modules in presenting teaching techniques and progressions from first time telemarker up to beginner turns, communication styles, telemark skier analysis, and telemark skiing demonstrations.

Telemark Level Two Certification

This four-day course focuses towards teaching intermediate telemark skiing. It comprises the New Zealand telemark progression, techniques for teaching, communication, and telemark skier analysis, as well as demonstration criteria through intermediate turns with pole plants.

Telemark Level Three Certification

This course, consisting of a one-day pre-course followed later in the season by a five-day workshop/exam, is designed for those looking to develop their telemark instructing and progress onto teaching in all-mountain situations. It covers the demonstration and clinicing of upper-level skills and techniques. A lot of time is also spent improving the candidates’ personal telemark skiing skills.

Telemark Crossover Course

This course is designed to give members from other disciplines the knowledge to teach a beginner lesson in telemark skiing and understand the basic movements of telemarking.
It is advised that you have a couple of lessons from a NZSIA qualified instructor before sitting this course – it’s expected that you have spent some time Telemarking and can link formed telemark turns already.

ISIA Avalanche Course

The ISIA Avalanche course is intended for Ski, Snowboard and Telemark Instructors wanting to expand their knowledge of the mountain environment, to travel safely within it and impart knowledge useful for an instructor within organised area boundaries worldwide. This qualification is required to achieve ISIA status, along with your NZSIA/SBINZ Level Three instructing qualification and a second discipline.
