Telemark Level Three

This course, consisting of a one-day pre-course followed later in the season by a five-day workshop/exam, is designed for those looking to develop their telemark instructing and progress onto teaching in all-mountain situations.

The course covers the demonstration and clinicing of upper-level skills and techniques including check-hop turns, carved turns and switch turns as well as methods for skiing in difficult conditions. Time is also spent improving the candidates’ personal telemark skiing skills.

The Candidates are progressively assessed throughout the entire course for their personal skiing, demonstrations technical understanding and teaching ability. Personal skiing skills include free skiing on and off piste, and adaptability of technique to suit the terrain and conditions.

Skiing demonstrations include intermediate turns with and without pole-plant, step turns, check-hop turns, carved and switch turns. Technical understanding is assessed by demonstrating the ability to implement new movements upon being tasked and the ability to discuss and present a variety of technical skiing topics on and off the snow. Teaching skills include communication, skier analysis, exercise selection, methodology, variety and effectiveness, demonstration accuracy, group management and feedback technique.

Why take this certification:This qualification has more emphasis on high-level telemark performance. At this level, the instructor should be able to offer skill analysis and improvement ideas to the highest level on all terrain.

What’s next:Upon achieving the Telemark Level Three, we suggest you consider taking the ISIA Avalanche Course, a second dicipline (to teach beginners in another discipline), a second language and a first aid course. These courses certify instructors to become internationally qualified (ISIA) Telemark Instructors.
