Simon started skiing at Whakapapa ski area sometime around the early 80’s. Somehow he managed to get a coveted place on the Whakapapa rookie program which was quite something as skiing in jeans with your feet glued together was quite the look back in 1990. Moving thru NZSIA exams Simon became an examiner in 1994 while doing back to back winters between NZ, Austria, France, Canada and the USA.
After a near death experience with Mt Ruapehu erupting (which is a story you can ask him about in person) at the end of the epic 1995 season, Simon chose to head to the South Island for a look before heading back to Breckenridge. This look convinced him that there were some great opportunities and he applied and was successful in gaining a supervisor’s job at the Remarkables ski area.
Simon has never been one to sit around much and took a wee sabbatical of 10 yrs from teaching skiing, working as a jet boat driver for dart river safaris, spending winters heli ski guiding and then started a fly fishing guiding business all of which put Simon’s people skills to action.
Simon has become a family man with 2 sprogs and has come back into the NZSIA fold recertifying as a trainer/examiner and now spends his NZ winters working at Coronet Peak as a trainer and instructor. During the summer months he can be found helping international anglers chase elusive trophy trout on the waters of the lower South Island.
