Steph’s introduction to skiing was on the living room floor with her parent’s old leather lace-ups on wooden skis. At aged 13 Steph finally made it to the snow, graduating to the slopes of Whakapapa. Her Dad taught her the giant snow plough and dragged her all over the mountain.
As a student, the American J1 visa enabled Steph to do a season of OE in the steeps and deeps at Alta, Utah. After university in Dunedin Steph got a real job in the big city, but spent her day gazing out the office window at the ensuing Southern Alps. The real job didn’t last long as the lure of being a Rookie Ski Instructor at Mt Hutt was too strong to resist.
Under the guidance of the Examiners at the time, Steph spent six years jumping through the hoops of the NZSIA certification levels to become an Examiner herself. Steph was on the NZSIA Executive Committee from 1995 until 2007 and has been an Alpine Technical Committee member since 1998. In the off-season Steph works for the Aspen Skiing Company as an Instructor and Trainer. She is also a current examiner with the PSIA-RM.
Steph was lucky enough to be part of the NZ Inter-Ski team to go to Switzerland in 2003, Korea in 2007 and St Anton in 2011 and has been Ski Course Manager since 2007.
