Message from the NZSIA President – Daniel Bogue

The leaves are turning and the mornings are getting colder and the Board has started its series of meetings leading into winter. The committees and Board have had a busy summer working in the background as we continue our development of educational resources, board documents and storage. We managed to get a Ski level 3 pre course completed in Switzerland but we were a long way off getting back to normal Northern hemisphere operations. We did get some Level ones completed at Snow Planet and these continue to be scheduled through May. With the world opening up and freedoms returning fingers crossed we have a busy NZ winter and we get to travel abroad again next summer.

Here are some developments since the last Boards meetings

AGM and Induction – This will be in Queenstown this year, based in Frankton – Holiday Inn – Remarkables park. The AGM will follow the induction on the 17 of June. Two votes this year at the AGM will be for President and Vice President. Both myself and Claire will be re-standing as we would both like a second term as we transition out of covid and develop future strategy.

New Manuals – I would like to show my appreciation to the committees and all the staff that have worked hard to get the content written and filmed for the new manuals. It is exciting to have all the divisions involved in the project and I am looking forward to seeing the final product. Keith and the Team at 360 NZ have also been developing a platform to launch the manuals into digital space. See below for more details from Keith. See also an update on the NZSIA App – links below.

Interski Finland 2023 – The board has decided to send a team to Interski March 2023. The team numbers and makeup are yet to be finalised. The board will work with individual committees to establish numbers and criteria. Interski is under new leadership with Eric Sheckleton from the United States having been elected president in April. Interski is working to develop the 2023 and future events. Check out www.interski2023.com for more details.

NZSIA vehicles – We will be renting vehicles again in 2022. We are hoping to have 2 vehicles available for transport up and down the mountains and around the country.

SAANZ/Industry discount – We are working to finalise the details of the SAANZ agreement/industry discount and will update you all when we get it signed off.

Welcome to winter 2022

  1. Mobile App

We are proud to announce a new direction in the digital space, with the launch of a Mobile App, available on both Android and Apple. This new focus will allow members and candidates to easily access learning resources, from e-learning to the manuals. The App provides quick access to ALL e-learning courses, from all divisions. It tracks your progress and gives our committees a strong platform from which to develop new e-learning courses.

The App will also be used to communicate to candidates during courses and it offers a forum area for some good ol’ robust discussions between members. A whole series of skiing and riding videos will also be featured within the App in due course.

Download it by searching for “NZSIA” on the Goggle Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nzsia.andriodapp or Apple App store: https://apps.apple.com/nz/app/nzsia/id1590244683

  1. New Digital Snowboard Manual

All divisions have been working hard over the summer to write a full series of new manuals. This has created opportunity for divisions to align on key teaching methodologies, bringing the NZSIA closer together as an organisation. As part of this process, the NZSIA Board has decided to trial an interactive digital version of the Snowboard Manual, to be released at the end of May. This new digital format will be intuitive, easy to navigate, include dozens of videos, and be fully accessible from the Mobile App.

IMPORTANT: This is a trial season, with only the digital version of the new snowboard manual available (i.e. no printed version). It will help us to gauge whether we continue offering a print version or go completely digital with all divisions. We urge all members to check out the new digital snowboard manual when it is released at the end of May. The new Ski, Adaptive and Telemark manuals will be published next summer.

4. Women’s Snowboard Initiative

To all our female snowboard members… THANK YOU!

Thank you for taking the time to fill out the survey at the end of last year and thank you for your patience. We have a plan!

A number of things have changed over the summer and we have a new Women’s Initiative, with the goal of increasing numbers of Female Level Threes and Trainers. Read more here.
