As a result, Daniel Bogue will continue as President and Claire Dooney as Vice President, both confirmed to continue in their roles unopposed at the upcoming AGM. We’d like to thank Dan and Claire for their ongoing leadership and commitment to NZSIA.
As there are no contested positions, electronic voting will not be required this year. The appointments will be formally acknowledged at the AGM in Wānaka on Saturday 7 June.
Thank you to all members for continuing to engage with the leadership and direction of NZSIA. Your involvement is key to the strength of our organisation.
If you have any questions, please contact our Returning Officer, Priscilla Duff at admin@nzsia.org.

Reminder: Approval Required for Any Teaching or Training on New Zealand Mountains
The New Zealand Snowsports Instructors Alliance (NZSIA) would like to remind all members and affiliates that any teaching, coaching, or training activity conducted on New Zealand mountains must have the explicit approval of the respective mountain management.
This requirement exists for a number of important reasons, including:
- Liability and Safety: Resorts must manage risk and ensure all on-mountain activity complies with their safety and operational standards.
- Lift Pass Access and Benefits: Unauthorised use of lift passes for commercial or training purposes may breach resort agreements.
- Immigration Law Compliance: Instructing or coaching without the proper visa or work rights can result in serious legal consequences for the individual and the resort.
Participating in or facilitating unapproved teaching or training on New Zealand mountains may result in disciplinary action, including:
- Suspension or termination of your SBINZ/NZSIA membership
- Jeopardising your future employment opportunities with Snow Schools and resorts across New Zealand
- Potential legal consequences depending on the nature of the breach
Unapproved activity, often referred to as “teaching on the black”, undermines these systems and puts individuals, resorts, and the wider snowsports industry at risk. NZSIA is aware and has seen an increase in such instances. We are working closely with resorts and Snow Schools to identify and address these cases, and are proactively contacting members when breaches are reported.
We strongly encourage all members to maintain open communication with mountain management and snow schools regarding any planned activity. If in doubt, seek permission first.
Let’s work together to maintain the integrity, professionalism, and legal compliance of our snow sports industry in Aotearoa.
For any questions or concerns, please contact the mountains directly or NZSIA by emailing admin@nzsia.org.

From the Archives: Back to the ’80s – The People Who Shaped NZSIA
Who were the legends behind the jackets in the early days of NZSIA? The 1980s were a defining chapter in NZSIA’s story, with key individuals stepping up to lay the foundations for the organisation we’re proud to be part of today. Think pioneering instructors, bold moves, and even bolder ski fashion, this article dives into the people and moments that helped turn a growing alliance into a respected national body.
Plus, don’t miss the legendary Ski Whizz episode from 1986 – Queenstown nightlife, slope side antics, peak retro style, and some very familiar faces.
Big thanks to Simon Cawley for continuing to bring our history to life – whether you’re here for the insights or the big hair, this one’s worth a read!
